Sandwiches in Puerto Rico are not just any sandwich. They are made with fresh-baked bread, loaded with your favorite meats and cheeses and ensalada (lettuce and tomato) if you choose, then lightly grilled in a press so the crust is warm and crispy and the inside is still soft and chewy. Try some of these great sandwich places on your next trip to Puerto Rico.

Eric’s Bakery

Eric’s is a family-run panaderia that has been in business for over 40 years. Their family’s recipe is loved by all and people drive miles to get their bread and other delights. Their sandwiches are worth the drive to Aguadilla, so make a day of it. Grab some sandwiches and cold Cokes and head to one of the great beaches on the northwest coast.

El Bostel De Los Sandwiches

The term “bostel” can be used for a pitbull or “the big boss,” so you know El Bostel de los Sandwiches is the real deal and makes a mean sandwich. This is the place to go for those late night munchies after a night of drinking and dancing in Villalba.

Kasalta

Kasalta is sandwich shop, bakery, deli and gourmet dining. Their menu covers it all. Try the Angus Roast Beef sandwich with arúgula, tomato campari, Gruyere cheese and Dijon mustard. During a visit, President Barack Obama gave the sandwiches at Kasalta a “thumbs up.”

Altamira Bakery

Altamira Bakery is a nice little bakery in the Guaynabo Shopping Center, where after your first visit “everybody knows your name.” The favorite sandwich here is the Tripleta, Puerto Rico’s version of the Cubano, served on the traditional grilled criollo bread with onion and tomato, and you can add lettuce for a small extra cost.

El Churry

El Churry is a popular food truck which has grown to about 7 locations in the San Juan area since its start in 1998. This is definitely for your late-night and after-bars crowd, or if you just need that mid-night snack, since they are open until 4:00am. Sign up for the Churry Club and receive discounts, offers and much more. Use their website to find the location nearest you.

El Kifo

Known for its conch sandwich, El Kifo is a fun arts-entertainment bar-grill. This is a great place to gather with friends for a few cold ones to just relax and enjoy good food.

Cafetería Punto Once

The sandwiches at Cafetería Punto Once in Ponce are divine. There are many varieties of meats and mixed meat salads, and this is another place for an amazing conch meat sandwich. Join them for live music, lively conversation and lovely food.

El Burén Sandwich

The pastrami sandwich from El Burén is one of the best anywhere, and you must try the two specials of the house, the Cacique and the Burenazo. Come hungry because these sandwiches are big, or consider splitting one to make sure you have room for dessert.

Moncho Pan Panadería

Many residents and visitors alike have their favorite place for pan, and the bread at Moncho Pan Panadería has been called “the best in the world.” There is nothing like a sandwich on fresh-baked bread and just-sliced deli meats. They have a number of hard meats like salami and prosciutto, that they thinly slice to make your sandwich. The classics like pernil (roast pork) on the sobao bread is irresistible.
